August 2025, in a small village
On a sunny day Jack was walking his dog Benny. Jack's parents own a large piece of
farmland mainly filled with orange plantations, where Jack and his dog play fetch or hide &
seek all the time. Just like every day Jack happily headed to the southern plantations with a
beautiful white and bay dog running in front of him. As they got to the plantations Jack
launched the ball, shouting: "Benny, fetch!" and threw the ball as far into the fields as
possible. Benny started running in the same direction as the ball and a few seconds later he
was trotting back with a small yellow ball in his mouth, happily wagging his tail back and
forth.
After some time of playing fetch, Benny came back with the ball and started hopping
around Jack. He got down on his knees and said: "What, do you want to play hide & seek
now?" Benny started barking Woof! Woof! " Yes, you want to? OK, let's go! Run!" shouted
Jack while standing up, throwing the ball into the plantations and running to the opposite
side of the field. They both knew what to do – just run around, get the ball and then find
each other. They were having fun every time playing this game and nothing ever went
wrong.
About 40 minutes went by but for Jack it felt like hours. He was running around trying
to find Benny but he was nowhere to be found, as if he had just disappeared. Jack even
climbed up one of the orange trees but couldn't see anything special or suspicious. He
thought that Benny must have run into the next plantation, even though it had never
happened before. ‘Hmmm… Maybe I should tell my parents and ask them to help me find
him’, thought Jack. So he quickly went back to the house saying: "Dad! Dad? Where are you?
Mom?". When he entered the kitchen he saw his mom washing the dishes. When she
noticed him in the kitchen she asked: "What's wrong, why do you need daddy? He’s not
home right now, but he should come back really soon. May I help you somehow?" ,,Umm..
Well, yeah, I was playing hide & seek with Benny at the southern orange plantation, but it's
been over an hour and I can't find him. I was calling him and he usually comes every time.
I'm really worried about him." answered Jack.
A few minutes later Jack's dad arrived so all three of them split up and started
searching for Benny between the trees. After some time dad shouted: "Everyone come here!
I think I found him!" They all ran towards the voice and sure enough – Benny was lying on the
ground at the edge of the southern orange plantations, looking dead, as if he choked on
something. It even looked like there was a sphere-shaped item in his throat. Could it have
been the ball? No, it was lying on the ground next to Benny. Jack dropped to the ground,
hugged Benny and started crying: " He was my best friend! I can't lose him! Who will play
fetch and hide & seek with me now?! No, this can't be happening! No!" The mother tried to
calm him down while dad was calling the vet. So they waited, but when the vet arrived there
was nothing in his throat anymore. The vet was sure that he choked on some larger orange-
sized item, but there just wasn't anything there. It was as if it had disappeared…
